The Benefits of Microporous Insulation in General Aerospace Applications
General Applications and Benefits:
Because microporous insulation was originally developed for use in the aerospace industry, ThermoDyne’s Excelflex® and Excelblok® insulation systems already enjoy a position of prominence in the aerospace marketplace. Typical applications for the materials include engine turbine covers and insulators, thrust reversers, auxiliary power unit insulators, engine cowlings, heat shields, thermal battery insulators and other high-temperature insulating structures for systems or components on aircraft.
As the graph below illustrates, both Excelflex® and Excelblok® microporous insulation systems supply the highest degree of thermal protection possible for the temperature ranges they service, and provide thermal conductivity curves even lower than that of still air. These benefits, in conjunction with superb space and weight saving properties, make ThermoDyne’s microporous materials ideal for aerospace environments where material conservation and performance are critical at elevated temperatures.

Commercial Aircraft Applications and Benefits:
Within the commercial aircraft arena, ThermoDyne’s microporous insulation systems are often sought to solve problems ranging from fire protection and heat containment in an aircraft galley, to insulating the nacelles on the aircraft’s engines.
In addition, recent surveys indicate that every “unnecessary pound” on a jet-liner costs the operating entity some $10,000 or greater per year in fuel costs/consumption and lost “body” or luggage weight. As a result, microporous insulation is ideal in providing solutions to often outdated or cumbersome insulation systems that require excess or unnecessary weight in layers of blanket, paper or fibrous materials.
Military Aircraft and Weapons Systems Applications and Benefits:
Like the commercial aircraft industry, military aircraft share the same high expectations for high temperature insulation materials, and expect them to perform within minimum space and weight parameters. Although the end goals are somewhat different in that modern military aircraft are increasingly more concerned with such factors as maneuverability, internal ordnance space, and stealth profile, the benefits of microporous insulation can be easily demonstrated as the materials lend themselves very well to the harsh environments associated with modern combat scenarios.
Recently, microporous materials have also been used in a variety of capacities on guided munitions and “smart” weapons, including the insulation systems for thermal batteries and nose-cones.
